October 13th: Does The End Justify The Means?

A Renaissance writer, Machiavelli coined such phrases as, "it is better to be feared than loved," or "He who wishes to deceive will never fail in finding willing dupes." We are applying what we learned to modern life. This includes analyzing roles of librarians, coaches, principals, etc. with a Machiavellian eye as well as examining how Machiavellian tenants are often seen in popular TV programming.
In this live discussion we will be examining does The End Justify The Means - in particular we will discuss Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates - he destroyed thousands of copies of the Daily Cal (UC- Berkeley) student newspaper that did not endorse him. What would Machiavelli think of this and why?
